From the Session of Renaissance Presbyterian Church:

On Monday June 1, 2020 while threats of violence against protestors echoed across our land and the stench of tear gas lingered in the streets, President Donald Trump seized hold of that which he holds no authority: God’s Holy Word. He did not pray. He did not recite scripture. Rather, he wielded God’s word as a weapon to be used against the people.  As our faith is mocked and our sacred word exploited, it is our Christian duty to lift up the truth of the gospel: that Jesus came to bring good news to the poor, proclaim release to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind, and to let the oppressed go free (Luke 4:18-19).

Because President Trump has publicly claimed to be a member of the Presbyterian church, but the denomination has found no proof of his membership in any PC(USA) congregation for which he asserts he is a member, we cannot request the session of a congregation to hold him accountable for his lack of Christian stewardship of his political responsibilities: his rejection of the prophetic calls and people’s cries for justice in both human and international relations, as well as, his many defamations and continuous self-glorifications. We hereby publicly declare, “The primary purpose of every human being is to glorify God and enjoy God forever” by loving God and all creation in the way of Jesus Christ through the power and grace of the Holy Spirit.

Like St. John's Episcopal Cathedral in Washington, DC, Renaissance Presbyterian Church is a house of worship where all are welcome and encouraged to participate in communal worship, loving fellowship, and humble discipleship.

Mindful that God is a God of the oppressed, we, as disciples of Jesus Christ, urge the members of our congregation and the PC(USA) denomination to have the courage to confront, repent, and dismantle the sin of racism and white supremacy and replace them with an equitable and just community rooted in the sacredness, dignity, and liberation of all creation. Prophetically we call upon all politicians and elected officials in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, the state of Tennessee, the United States of America, and throughout the world to participate in the building up of God’s kingdom of love on this earth.
